Template Making tips:
In making templates for drama programs or any other program as well, I like my designs to have a strong and quick recognition with the theme of each particular program. Some events are easy to think of a defining feature, like for beauty and the beast I used a single rose and dark mansion like surroundings. For grease I use design elements from a 50's diner. Unfortunately many times the strongest visual you can think of for an event is a particular person, generally a copyrighted image. So What i like to do is silhouette.
For a shakespeare themed production I found a classic picture from Hamlet. I opened it up in Photoshop, and used the pen tool. To trace the outline, then fill the area with black. Using the original as reference. Then I trash the original and add my own background. I like to use a canvas looking background and apply a lighting effects filter (Filters>Render>Lighting Effects) for a dramatic spotlight look. And there it is, all the recognition without any of the copyright issues.
Text is also very important to convey the feel. Fonts come in millions of different styles and you should be able to find one perfectly matching whatever your theme is. And once you've found a text don't forget that layer styles are very easy to use to achieve a unique look. Here I used a bevel with a texture and a gradient overlay, for a rough old rocky feel.
When you're making the image nodes Keep the same style and elements you've already used. They are a big portion of the design and thee element bringing the pictures together with the template. In this template i used the same rocky old look I used on the text.

Preparing the template for implantation into image processing programs differs from program to program. In TEPS X You just need to create an alpha channel where the images will show through the background, and place your image nodes behind the image file in TEPS setup. For REOS programs you may need to create reverse masks for each image if you're going to be using rough edges. Check with your particular documentation to see how to set up files to use in your program. If you're going to use them in Photoshop, you can drop them straight on and resize to fit or use mask layers to cut them down to specific sizes with greater ease.
